What the move itself may cost
These are estimates from published national averages, not quotes. Your price depends on how much you ship, the season and the services you choose. Michigan to the West Valley is a 1,600–2,000+ mile move.
| How you move | Estimated cost | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Full-service movers | $15,380 (1,600–2,000 miles) to $18,400 (2,000+ miles) median for a 3-bedroom home (Move.org, 2024 quotes) | They pack, load, drive and unload. Smaller homes cost less. The easiest choice on your back. |
| Moving container (PODS-style) | about $4,540–$4,700 (Move.org averages at roughly 1,750 and 2,050 miles) | You or hired help load it; they drive it. Prices vary by home size. |
| DIY rental truck | About $1,478–$2,979 for a 1,750-mile rental, depending on home size (Move.org) | Fuel, hotels, meals and loading help are extra. Driving a large truck for days is hard work. |
Tip: get at least three written quotes, and check any interstate mover's USDOT number with FMCSA before you sign.

Sources: MERIC cost of living series (C2ER data), U.S. Census QuickFacts and the Tax Foundation. State averages hide big local differences, and HOA or recreation fees in 55+ communities are extra. Compare them with the Cost to Live calculator.
Utilities: MERIC's utilities index is close to the national average in both states. In Arizona, the big swing is summer air conditioning, while winter heating bills mostly go away. Ask the seller for 12 months of electric bills on any home you're considering.
Michigan vs. Arizona: state taxes
Not tax advice. Greg Slaughter is a real estate agent, not a tax advisor. These are published state rules as of October 2026. Federal tax, local taxes, property taxes and your own income mix all matter. Please talk with your own tax professional or CPA before you decide.
| Item | Michigan | Arizona |
|---|---|---|
| State income tax | Flat 4.25% for tax year 2026 (Michigan Department of Treasury). Detroit and some other cities levy their own city income tax. [source] | Flat 2.5% for all income levels and filing statuses [source] |
| Retirement income | Social Security is subtracted. From tax year 2026, qualifying pension and retirement income can be subtracted up to an inflation-adjusted cap ($65,897 single / $131,794 joint was the 2025 cap) (Treasury RAB 2026-1). [source] | Social Security isn't taxed. Ask a tax professional how pension and IRA/401(k) withdrawals are treated; the flat 2.5% rate applies to Arizona taxable income. [source] |
| State sales tax | 6%, with no local sales tax added (Michigan Department of Treasury). [source] | 5.6% state rate; county and city rates are added (ADOR rate table, Oct 1, 2026) [source] |
The short version
Michigan taxes income at a flat 4.25% for 2026, and Detroit and some other Michigan cities add a city income tax. Arizona's flat rate is 2.5%. Both states leave Social Security untaxed. Starting with tax year 2026, Michigan lets retirees subtract qualifying pension and retirement income up to an inflation-adjusted cap, so a retiree living mainly on Social Security and a modest pension may pay little Michigan income tax. Whether you save depends on your income mix. Michigan's 6% sales tax has no local add-ons, while Arizona's 5.6% state rate has county and city rates added, so you may pay a similar or higher combined rate at the register in Arizona.

Tips for 55+ movers from Michigan
- Budget for higher home prices. Census data puts Michigan's median owner-occupied home value well below Arizona's, and MERIC's housing index is higher in Arizona too. Plan your budget before you shop, and compare HOA fees with the Cost to Live calculator.
- Winter becomes the good season. No snow to shovel, and January highs near 68°F at Phoenix (NOAA). Many Michiganders start as snowbirds. See the snowbird guide.
- Plan for a long drive. About 2,000 miles is a 3–4 day trip at a comfortable pace. Many 55+ movers ship the car or fly and let the movers or container company handle the household goods.
- Your property tax rate may drop. The Tax Foundation puts Arizona's effective property tax rate well below Michigan's, but the bill depends on the home's value and location. Ask about the Maricopa County Senior Freeze if you're 65+.
- Downsize before you pack. Every pound costs money on a long-distance move. Greg's downsizing guide can help.
- Line up healthcare early. Find doctors near your new community before you arrive (see hospitals and healthcare near 55+ communities), and review your Medicare plan, since some plans are tied to where you live.
- Tour by video first. Greg does live video tours, so you can narrow down communities before you fly in.

Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to move from Michigan to Arizona?
It depends on how much you move and how. As estimates: Move.org's 2024 medians for a 3-bedroom full-service move were $15,380 for 1,600–2,000 miles and $18,400 for 2,000+ miles. Moving containers averaged about $4,540–$4,700 for similar distances, and one-way truck rentals for 1,750 miles ran about $1,478–$2,979 before fuel, lodging and meals. Get at least three written quotes for your own move.
How far is Detroit or Grand Rapids from the West Valley?
By road, Detroit to Surprise, AZ is about 2,028 miles and Grand Rapids to Surprise is about 1,951 miles (OpenStreetMap routing). That's roughly 30–37 hours of driving, so most people plan four or five days.
Will I pay less state income tax in Arizona than in Michigan?
It depends on your income. Michigan's rate is 4.25% for 2026 and Arizona's is 2.5%, and neither taxes Social Security. Michigan now lets retirees subtract qualifying retirement income up to a cap, so many retirees pay little Michigan tax already. Greg Slaughter is a real estate agent, not a tax advisor, and this isn't tax advice. Please ask your own tax professional.
Is Arizona more expensive than Michigan?
On average, yes. MERIC's second-quarter 2026 index scored Michigan at 92.1 and Arizona at 108.6 (U.S. average = 100), mostly because of housing (82.9 vs. 120.5). Census data shows a median owner-occupied home value of $231,600 in Michigan and $394,500 in Arizona (2020–2024).
Which West Valley 55+ communities do people from Michigan like?
Greg often shows Michigan buyers golf and lake communities with reasonable recurring costs, such as Sun City, Sun City West, Ventana Lakes and Westbrook Village. The best fit depends on your budget, how much golf you play and the HOA you're comfortable with.
