Medicare Open Enrollment: October 15 to December 7, 2026

This is the once-a-year window to change your Medicare health or drug coverage. You can join, switch or drop a Medicare Advantage Plan or Medicare drug plan, or switch to Original Medicare. Changes start January 1, 2027, and the plan must get your request by December 7 (Medicare.gov).

If you're happy with your current plan, you don't have to do anything, but plans can change their costs, benefits and doctor networks each year.

  • Free local help: Arizona's SHIP Medicare counselors aren't selling anything. In Maricopa County, call the Area Agency on Aging, Region One, at 602-280-1059, or the statewide SHIP helpline at 1-800-432-4040 (Arizona DES).
  • Official Medicare line: 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227), or compare plans at Medicare.gov.
  • Check your hospital is in network. As of October 6, 2026, Abrazo Health's website warns members of Arizona Complete Health, Care1st Health Plan Arizona, Ambetter from Arizona Complete Health and WellCare plans that they “may be at risk of experiencing network disruption effective 1/1/2027.” If you use an Abrazo hospital, ask your plan before you renew.
  • New to Arizona? Moving here can change which plans you can use, so call SHIP or your plan as part of your move.

Closest hospital and 24-hour ER to each 55+ community

Distances are straight-line (“as the crow flies”) from a central point in each community, so your drive will be longer and depends on where your home is. In an emergency, call 911. Paramedics choose the hospital, and it may not be the closest one.

Healthcare questions to ask before you choose a community

  • How long is the drive to the hospital, ER and doctors you'd actually use? Try it at the times you'd normally go.
  • Are those hospitals and doctors in your Medicare plan's network for next year?
  • If you'll be a snowbird, how does your plan cover care in Arizona and back home?
  • Is there a pharmacy, lab and urgent care close by?
  • Does the community or a nearby club offer rides, wellness programs or volunteer drivers? Ask Greg and he'll check.

Summer heat matters for health too. See the heat tips in Moving to Arizona at 55+ and the snowbird & seasonal living guide.
